IF EVERYONE SOUNDS THE SAME, PRICE WINS — AND YOU LOSE
Open ten websites in your industry and read the first sentence on each one. Chances are you will read the same promise ten times: quality service, trusted results, customer first. Nobody is lying. Everybody is just saying the same thing. And when every option sounds identical, customers do the only thing left to them: they pick the cheapest one.
THE PRICE TRAP
Competing on price feels like competing at all, but it is a race with no finish line worth crossing. There is always someone willing to go lower, and every discount trains your customers to wait for the next one. Worse, a low price sends its own message. Customers assume something must be missing: the experience, the quality, the care. You did not set out to be the cheap option. You ended up there because nothing in your messaging gave people a better reason to choose you.
DIFFERENTIATION IS NOT A LOGO
Most owners hear "stand out" and think about colors, fonts, and a new logo. Those help people recognize you, but they do not help people choose you. Real differentiation lives in the offer itself: who you serve, what you refuse to do, how you deliver, and what happens after the sale. A bakery that only makes sourdough, a gym that only trains new parents, a plumber who guarantees a same-day arrival window — these businesses are not louder than their competitors. They are narrower, clearer, and easier to remember.
FIND THE ONE THING THEY CANNOT COPY
Ask yourself three questions. First, what do your best customers say about you that they never say about anyone else in your market? Second, what part of your process would a competitor find hardest to imitate — your sourcing, your speed, your guarantee, your follow-up? Third, what do you believe about your industry that most of your competitors would disagree with? The overlap of those three answers is your edge. It does not have to be dramatic. It has to be true, specific, and hard to copy.
SAY IT EVERYWHERE, THE SAME WAY
A differentiator that only appears on your homepage is a secret, not a strategy. Put the same sharp claim on your website, your social profiles, your invoices, your voicemail, and the way your team answers the phone. Repetition is not boring to a customer who is seeing you for the first time. It is how they learn what you stand for. When every touchpoint says the same distinct thing, customers start saying it for you — and that is the cheapest marketing there is.
THE TEST BEFORE YOU SPEND
Before your next ad, cover up your business name on your own marketing and read it back. If it could belong to any competitor in town, do not run it yet. Rewrite it until only you could have said it. That single edit is worth more than a bigger budget, because an ad for a forgettable brand just buys forgettable attention at a higher price.
THE PAYOFF
You do not need to be better at everything. You need to be the only one saying one true thing, clearly, everywhere. Do that, and price stops being the deciding factor — because customers are no longer comparing identical options. They are choosing the one business that actually sounds like itself.
